A study conducted by researchers at the University of California found that people who frequently use sleeping pills may be at a higher risk of developing dementia.
According to the findings, the type and amount of sleep medication used play a significant role in the increased risk. Studies have also suggested that risk factors and the risk of developing the disease differ among people of different ethnicities.
The researchers analyzed data from nearly 3,000 adults who did not have dementia at the start of the study.
White participants who frequently used sleeping pills were 79 percent more likely to develop dementia than those who rarely used the drug.
In contrast, frequent use of sleep medications in black participants did not significantly increase their risk of dementia.
